Junior Students - Mon Grades

As of 1st March, 2006 SMA is pleased to be offering all junior grades up to 6th Kyu (green belt) mon grades.

Mon grades is a system to offer junior students another way of achieving their goals if it is felt they are not quite ready to receive their next belt. Instead, they will receive a half grade - mon grade.

By introducing the mon grade, the student will still invoke a sense of achievement, plus also making it easier to learn the syllabus, by further breaking it down. Once the student achieves green belt, it is hoped that they will have developed enough to continue through the normal grading system.

The mon grade system will work as the current system, whereby Sensei will continually assess performance during normal classes. Having achieved a mon grade, the student may collect a ribbon from reception, the colour of which will be appropriate to the next belt e.g. white belt with orange ribbon. This ribbon should be sewn around the end of the belt, so it is easily identifiable in class. Licence books will not be signed until the full grade is achieved, however, certificates will still be issued.

Juniors may still grade a full belt, providing they have met the criteria.
